OXFORD FORUM

Moral Philosophy and Neo-Confucianism: The Future

31st October-2nd November, 2013

Dear Colleague:

On the occasion of the establishment of the International Society of Neo-Confucianism and the celebration of the 40th Founding Anniversary of Journal of Chinese Philosophy, we have organized this symposium. You are cordially invited to the Oxford Forum: “Moral philosophy and Neo-Confucianism: the Future” (in Christ Church, Oxford University, 31st October-2nd November 2013).

Moral philosophy is justifiably a key starting point for the dialogue between Eastern and Western civilizations. To facilitate such a dialogue, it is of crucial importance to examine the growth of moral philosophy on the development of Chinese culture and Confucianism in the context of modernization and globalization.

The symposium is spread over three days and will include keynote speeches, a series of talks, and discussion sessions. Amongst others, the following topics are preferred:

1.       Progress in contemporary British moral philosophy

2.       Hume’s moral philosophy and Confucian moral philosophy

3.       Kant's moral theory and Confucian moral theory

4.       Utilitarian ethics : the social transformation of the West and China

5.       Utilitarian ethics of the West and utilitarian ethics of the Confucianism

6.       Utilitarian ethics and consideration of utility in Neo-Confucianism

7.       British philosophy and Kant's moral philosophy

8.       Contemporary Western moral philosophy and Neo-Confucianism

9.       Future of British moral philosophy and future of Neo-Confucian ethics

As we have a tight schedule, your prompt cooperation is most appreciated. Please follow these guidelines for presentations and accommodation.

1. A 300-word abstract of your presentation should be submitted to Professor Yaobin Ma at 2013isneoconfucianism@gmail.com, by the end of September, 2013.

2. The symposium will be held in the McKenna Room, Christ Church, St Aldates, Oxford, OX1 1DP. You may find your way from the maps online, such as maps.google.com.

3. For those who need accommodation, Common Wealth House (B&B) is recommendable, which is within walking distance (2 minutes or so) from the location of symposium. It has a cheap rate (around20 for single room/night or26 for double room/night). You also have other choices of Oxford Hotels and B&B. Booking in advance is necessary. For flexibility and simplicity for both you and the symposium, please contact the hotel(s) on your own. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to address your questions to Professor Ma.

4. Once all participants have confirmed their attendance, a detailed programme will be made and sent out. Participants should register by 1st September, 2013 via the conference e-mail address (2013isneoconfucianism@gmail.com), which should also be used for all queries related to this matter.

5. The attendance at all the sessions of the symposium is free of charge, including refreshments (am + pm), but registration is mandatory, as spaces are limited.

Thank you for your timely response. We look forward to your participation. Bon voyage.
